How Our Bodies Cool Down

Throughout the day your body has different ways of exchanging heat to maintain homeostasis. We will be talking about the four different mechanisms of heat exchange and how wheelAIR helps to keep you cool throughout the day.

 

Heat is exchanged through: conduction, convection, radiation and evaporation.

Homeostasis is the state of steady internal conditions maintained by living things. This dynamic state of equilibrium is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits.

Conduction is the process of losing hear through physical contact with another object or body. For example, if you were to sit on a metal chair, heat from your body would transfer to the cold metal chair. 3% of body heat is lost through conduction.

 

Convection is the process of losing heat through the movement of air or water molecules across the skin. The use of a fan to cool off the body is one example of convection. The amount of heat loss from convection is dependent upon the airflow or in the water flow over the skin. 15% of body heat is lost through convection.

 

Radiation is a form of heat loss through infrared rays. This involves the transfer of heat from one object to another, with no physical contact involved. For example, the sun transfers heat to the earth through radiation. 60% body heat is lost through radiation.

 

Evaporation is the process of losing heat through the conversion of water to gas (evaporation of sweat). 20% of the body’s heat is lost through evaporation.

How does wheelAIR keep you cool?

The wheelAIR creates a constant flow of isothermal air, taking away that excess heat and moisture, reducing those risks of infection and irritation associated with humidity and temperature. Additionally, it is designed to reduce exhaustion, pain and discomfort caused by over-heating or over- sweating. While the airflow initially is pushed through two channels on the highest heat generating zones of the back, over time the 3D spacetec® layer will evenly distribute the airflow to the full contact area of the backrest, cooling down the full area in contact with the body. Furthermore, the isothermal stream of air supplied by the wheelAIR fan box takes the heat away from the body by flowing past it. The isothermal wheelAIR airflow lowers the humidity level, increasing the evaporation heat exchange rate.
